This past spring I graduated from the Alderleaf 9 month Wilderness Certification program. The program was both challenging and life-altering/inspiring. Though I already had a B.S. in Biology, Alderleaf taught so many skills not found in the curriculum of a traditional 4 yr. educational institution. The instructors are both knowledgeable and willing/available to help work on a skill or explore an area of interest further. In the 9 month program, we covered a wide range of topics . I found each topic exciting and well presented. Besides field trips, classroom and outdoor activities, expect to put in time outside of the school day researching, journaling and practicing skills such as bow drill, tracking, plant identification, wild crafting, etc. The readings and research enhance and complement the material covered in the classroom. The field trips are a chance to learn new skills and practice those learned in the classroom. I would highly recommend this program - whether you are looking for a non-traditional approach to higher education or if you want to enhance your knowledge and skills gained from a previous degree. I have found the knowledge and skills I have learned are needed in so many different volunteer and employment positions.
Alderleaf is a school where the instructors are truly passionate about the subject matter and about helping others grow. This school offers so much more than skills. They provide a welcoming community and introduce you to a network of people who genuinely want to make the world a better place. I can not say enough. Check out their open houses, read the testimonials or stop by to say "Hi".
