Their slogan says it all. Coffee should be an experience, not a routine. And at PD it is not a routine, if I lived in Portland, I would make my daily coffee EXPERIENCE a ROUTINE by going here every day. The drink menu is not a litany of sugary desserts disguised as coffee drinks. It is short with the classics all done to perfection in a warm happy vibe of professional baristas doing their thing.
House regular coffee was bitter, overly concentrated, and obviously outside the optimal drinking window. I've had better coffee in a hotel lobby. Seem like they just throw in a huge scoopful of pre-ground beans and don't pay attention to the roasting date. Why should I come to your coffee shop to get that? And why is it so difficult for supposed high end coffee shops to figure out? You roast the beans on this date. You wait 3 days then begin serving it. That will last around a week and then its done. Figure out how much coffee you need and never serve past-due coffee. It's not super complicated!
