We worked with CREAM and staff to pull off a large-scale creative community engagement event and they delivered fully. I belong in an local art collective called SUBSPACE. We open our basement to hold gallery shows and music events. Our most recent gallery show featured the works of Carlos Contreras (25) Tucson native. I worked with Marissa and Patrick to bring a LIVE Screenprinting to the event with 14 days notice. The artist and I wanted to incorporate and apparel element to the gallery show and thought that LIVE screenprinting would bring such dynamic way to interact with the art. Personally, I work in a textile cooperative so I wanted to pilot a circular economy concept at the LIVE screenprinting. Purchasing new garments produced in mass scale has a ubiquitous impact on our agriculture, water supply, and CO2 emissions. As well as bring all of the ethical challenges of oversea production and supply chain transparency to the garments. I brought this concern to CREAM and presented a potential solution, screenprinting exclusively on thrifted garments. Patrick and Marissa affirmed that sustainability is important to their company and willing to pilot this concept. Carlos and I thrifted all of our garments at the Goodwill Bins. The event was amazing! There was such creativity that the guests could interact with. From choosing the garments, to working with Patrick to find a location, guests walked away with a one of a kind apparel piece that didn't fuel the demand for mass produced garments and decreased textile waste, all while wearing art. I came to CREAM with a hand drawn illustration and a vague idea of wanting to make something out of it. They provided excellent service, from helping me choose a product to print on, to giving several detailed quotes to compare, to offering design advice to modify my art in a way that would best work with the printing process. It was really special to have personal communication like that throughout the process, and the finished bag is so gorgeous, I couldn't be happier. From a design professional, it is truly a pleasure to work with other design professionals of such high caliber.
