Sorry you didn't feel comfortable with the location of your host family. We're glad that we were able to arrange with the host family to give you rides until we were able to arrange another host family the following week where you felt more comfortable. We wish you would have let your Head Teacher, your Coordinator or our office know that you were paying for your own meals because we definitely would have arranged to have that fixed as well. We're sorry your experience wasn't what we hope all our volunteers have, thank you for your feedback.

ILP is very misleading. I had a bad experience volunteering last fall. I have done other volunteer trips in the past and nothing has come close to how disorganized ILP is. I didnt receive my teaching schedule until after a month of living in my volunteer country. I ended up having to pay for almost all of my meals for the last month of my trip (besides lunch that was provided at the school on weekdays). I was told information about my host family a week before leaving the US only to be told the day I flew into my country that I would now be living with a new host family. The first area I lived in was unsafe and It took a few weeks to be moved to a safer area. Read the contract very carefully because if you want to go home early expect to pay over $1,000 plus airfare. I wish I would have saved my money and chose a different volunteer program to volunteer with. ILP needs to focus more on the safety of their volunteers
Thanks for reaching out. I feel bad that your experience was below what we hope our volunteers will have in the DR. In the summer kids skip English classes when it's hot outside and regular school is out. We can't make them come even though we make great efforts to, and in the summer attendance can be less than 40% on some days. I can totally see how you wouldn't feel it's meaningful to only teach only a couple of kids on some days, to have an extra week off in between spring and summer, or to have days when only a handful of kids show up because it's raining. That's frustrating and I'm sorry. But to the kids that do show up despite those circumstances, it's well worth it. We'll do a better job of letting people know about that trend in the summer semester so they can decide whether they would prefer to go in the fall or spring terms when that doesn't happen or if they like smaller groups. With the food, I'm sorry that you felt it wasn't ok enough to eat. The food can be challenging and repetitive. Tamaris really cares about the volunteers and does her best. We review the food regularly but food is definitely a challenge for a lot of people while others like it--sorry we didn't make it work for you. We're reviewing our administrative policies and the best way to balance fun with safety and your review will help with that. We try to do our best with safety rules, but it sounds like we didn't do well with your group. Thanks for taking the time to let us know. --Steve

Scam. They promise food that they don't actually provide. They promise you will have meaningful work which isn't true. They send people home based on no actual evidence a violation occurred - which benefits them because they require any violator to pay their way home, saving ILP money. Shame on this organization.
I did ILP for my internship and it was the BEST. I made unforgettable memories and would recommend this program to anyone. Its incredibly affordable and a great way to travel the world.
Honestly, ILP has been such a great experience. My first time was very memorable, as well as a learning experience; so I decided to do it again! I enjoy working with the kids, exploring and learning about the various cultures. It has definitely opened my eyes for the better!
Hi Sydni. We try not to add much more to the 25+ hours of pre-departure training and prep we already have so that we can be sensitive to busy schedules of volunteers before departure. When you're living in a new culture, so many things work differently than what you're used to from back home and we understand that can be difficult to adjust to. We update preparation materials every semester so we will take a look at where we can improve. Thank you for your feedback on that. In ILP locations where volunteers live in apartments, they all live together. In Ukraine, Russia, and some other locations, ILP volunteers live with host families and naturally spend less time together than they would if they were living with the other volunteers. A lot of people choose Ukraine specifically for that, and think the host family is the best part of the experience. We're sorry that didn't work out well for you, but are glad that you enjoyed your Ukrainian experience.

I would not go with ILP again!!! They didnt care about their volunteers or our safety. Please find another organization to go with! I wouldnt take back the experience, but I wish I wouldve done it with a different organization. They did not prepare us for our trip at all. The teaching times were so random and all the volunteers were so spread out in the city we barely even got to see each other. A few girls went home early it was so bad.
