Quite an amazing museum and history of the mashantucket tribe. Certainly like no museum i have encountered. Cannot imagine how much money and effort was spent creating this museum but with that said it feels run down in some areas. Every restroom was in dire need of cleaning and some maintenance. The quality (condition) of the films being aged were clearly in a sorry state. Above the carabo hunt exhibit mildew or mold can be seen on many of the cloud panels. Much of the metalwork in the observation tower elevator shows rust and neglect. This is alarming. This was my first visit to the museum though my grandmother was a noted donor and acknowledged partner of the tribe. I was a little disappointed to see such deferred maintenance in such an amazing facility.
A bit too expensive at $22, and too "white man bad," but otherwise had some really cool presentations. The movie was pretty good as well. I've been to many museums from many cultures and countries. What I find interesting about white culture, that no other culture (or race) has, is the ability to honestly reflect at it's past historical mistakes and write them for all to see in the history books. Other cultures always blame everything on everyone else. This museum was no exception. They seemed more focused on blaming white people than to just tell history as it happened, warts and all.
It's an amazing place. Unfortunately, it was nearly empty of visitors and staff. The outside area was not maintained and gift shops and food areas were closed. Masks are required by everyone. The entry fee is reasonable.
Drove over an hour with a toddler to get to the museum only to find out that they were closed when they should have been open. No signs on the doors, no message when you call them. We called Foxwoods main number and the woman we talked to was very unfriendly and couldnt understand why they were closed herself. She put us on hold and talked to someone else and came back and said they decided an hour before they were not opening but wouldnt give us any information nor a discount for a later visit. She just said thank you for visiting Foxwoods and hung up on us. Very unprofessional all around. Will not return.
