My husband & I wish we could give this company a high rating. We found out about the owner, Ryan, & his talented work through YouTube. No doubt his artistic talent in woodworking is stunning! But from the very start, there were red flags in the way he handled his business w/ us. After our phone conversation discussing a rough design plan to convert our bus into a tiny home, he gave us an estimate that fit our budget. We know design plans & prices can change during a build, BUT we werent prepared for what happened. We excitedly dropped off our bus, paid a $6K deposit & signed a contract that allows clients to cancel the design project with a portion of their deposit refunded back to them. About 2 weeks after we dropped off the bus, HHC changed the quote to be more than double the original estimate stating: "If we are not able to come to some arrangement, I would be understanding and refund a portion of your budget and design deposit." Mind you, nothing in our design had changed at this point. We couldn't help but feel like this was a bait & switch. After Ryans explanation of not realizing how much his costs would be, we decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. So, instead of pulling out of the design project, we told him we'd work with him, compromising much of our design to bring the costs closer to the affordable price we were originally quoted. During the 3 months of the messiest business interaction we've ever had with a business owner, we were given a vague budget spreadsheet. Prices would increase when they should've been reduced, materials, items & costs were added without discussing the changes with us, and some questions were left unanswered. It was difficult to determine which features we could cut because changes between revisions werent highlighted and costs/features were grouped together. Rather than acknowledging our concerns as paying customers, Ryan repeatedly guilt-tripped us about paying his workers. Ryan made it clear that he was anxious to get started on the build and required another payment. Yet we hadnt received a completed design, as we were told we would be. We only received an updated budget and the price jumped over $5K due to basic bathroom plumbing and walls that he had forgotten to price (but were already listed in the budget). We had taken out a loan to pay the initial build payment, but this was the final red flag before we were fully committed. We were too concerned about the lack of attention to detail and difficulty communicating. We decided to not go forward with the build. Ryan lost his temper, sending us a couple of very unprofessional & angry emails, stating we were punishing him. He guilt tripped us again telling us he used the money to pay his workers, pay rent, & had to postpone other projects for our bus. Ryan initially wanted to charge us for canceling by adding a new $5K charge for damages to the $6K we had already paid. In the end, he kept the entire $6K deposit, except for paying for the damage that we found on our bus when we picked it up. Yes, our bus already had minor damage. When we asked for a detailed, itemized receipt of what our $6K paid for (hours worked by date), he sent us a simple "receipt" where the hours were perfectly rounded to add up to exactly $6K. He had no record of what time he had actually spent on our bus. It's unfortunate that Ryan's business skills don't compare to his talent in woodworking. We waited until July to see if he would do the right thing and refund some of our money, because we wanted to include that in our review. But to this day, we haven't received any refund from our deposit. If anyone is interested in more details including our email exchanges, spreadsheets, etc. please message on Yelp (Carolita M.). We shouldnt be punished for canceling a service that didn't meet our expectations. This is poor business & should be publicized.
