I only had enough time, energy and supplies to go through the nature loop which doesnt take more than 20 minutes. The trail that descends into the canyon from what I've read would take hours and theres little coverage from the sun. I've read reviews of peoples cars getting broken into and I did see a pile of broken glass on the shoulder where I parked so beware
the iliau nature loop was a very short loop around 0.02 miles with informative signs and great views however i do not reccomend taking the entire kukui trail it has large stretches that are very exposed so you can get very hot it is long around 6 miles and incredibly steep so be prepared and bring lots of water
Took the Kukui trail to drop down into the Waimea Canyon. Once on the canyon floor it links up with the Koaie Canyon trail. After a while it became impossible for us to navigate the trail and we were forced to setup camp. We only encountered two other parties while in the canyon. Scenery was absolutely beautiful. The trek back up was a pretty rough. Parking was sketch, as I had read about break-ins. We were able to leave our luggage at a hotel we would be staying at after the backpacking trip. I left the rental car doors unlocked, as there was nothing to steal in the car. Overall a great experience, I just wish there as more information out there about this trip... would have been nice to make it to the falls at the end.
Iliau Nature Loop is a short interpretative trail and an easy walk with beautiful views of Waimea Canyon. Worth a stop. No parking, no fees. Park parallel to the road.
The trail itself is pretty simple. Not much to do or look that you can't do in other parts of the park BUT the canyon view is fantastic. We stopped just a little before sunset and got quite a surprise with one of the brightest and most intense rainbows we have seen. The light was just unreal. Beautiful!!
