I purchased a $500 slab and the wood split within 1 week. I was told were sorry without any help at a resolution. Ive worked with them before and been pleased but I was hoping for a little bit better communication with my issue. No reply to my email as well with pictures.
Dear Valued Customer. I feel we expressed the RISK of trying to dry slabs without knowing the history of the cuts, trees, stacking and a number of factors. We only dried them at your request. All of our slabs are dry and flat, that is the only way we sell them. We scrap all the slabs that are unable to be used for quality furniture. This is the unfourtunate aspect of the Thick Lumber products business. There are variable that are hard to identify. We only ever try to be frank and up front with everyone to know how wood like this will behave. I am sorry for your experience and that it was not up to your expectations.

I had bad experiences buying slabs from this business in the past and stopped using them. Gave them another chance since the owner contacted me stating the operation had improved since then. I took slabs for them to dry and they are now warped beyond use. If I posted pictures, you'd see they look like potato chips. The owner said he'd refund my money and 10 days later, he said he didn't think he owed me anything. He had me pay for them before I saw them. I paid for them at the storefront location and was told to drive to the mill to get the slabs. What I paid for drying slabs that cannot be joined was almost the same price as buying Blonde Mahogany slabs from West Penn, perfect & ready to use. If I was told up front it's a "dry at your own risk", I would never have wasted the time and money. Jessica Palmer
This place has so many tree options when it comes to life-edge wood or if you need some custom wood pieces created. The people are amazing, knowledgeable and super helpful! Start "stalking" them on facebook to stay up to date on what they have coming out of their kiln. We are proud owners of a beautiful dining table measuring 42" in width by 86" or so in length! They glued 2 pieces of sweet gum pieces, yet you CAN'T see the seam at all - looks like one piece. Also used a life edge walnut piece to create our bar top. We certainly will be back since house project never seem to end.
Knowledgeable, friendly staff, value and expertise in all things good. To be able to shop in an environment that fosters creativity with people that are friendly and willing to help all skill levels is a relief. Not to mention that anything you purchase carries a detailed history and story behind it. My girlfriend and I are hobbyists and both at a novice level in woodworking and carpentry. On our first visit we were greeted by Kristen who was willing to point us in the direction of several collections of wood that may fit our needs. She let us wonder around, never pressured us, and when we had questions was always there to answer them without judgement. We feel lucky to have found a business that truly cares about the environment, creating beauty, and sharing their expertise. Imagine being a golfer and walking into a golf shop where every club on the rack was the club you have been missing and guaranteed birdies. Thats how we felt finding Carolina Urban Lumber.
Hi Michael, thanks for taking the time to leave a review. Can you please clarify the "online pricing" you are referencing that is causing the confusion? The only pricing we have listed online is for small products such as our charcuterie boards. Those prices may fluctuate in the shop based on the size and species that a customer selects and our website reflects that clearly. We do not price our lumber online because price per board foot changes sometimes based on the widths available, knots and checks present, etc. Lastly, we do not price our custom builds on our website because they are indeed custom and quotes can vary based on wide range of variables. As we strive to be as transparent as possible, please let us know where its muddy and wed be happy to make it clear. Thanks!

It is a neat small business I found a couple years ago and stop in periodically. People are helpful and knowledgeable. Their stock ebbs and flows with what the local tree market provides. Lumber quality too varies. So you can't always expect to find something specific you're looking for, but on the other hand you might well find something you weren't looking for. Update: Beware of a lack of price transparency. Cross examine any quote you get for the "up and extras." Do not go by their online pricing.
