Went in to have a wheel rebuilt. Andy quoted $80 for a wheel build, plus a certain price for spokes. All good in the hood. Then later in the conversation when I was about to leave my wheel with him he upped the spoke price by 50c each and wanted to charge me extra for taking the cassette off (and reinstalling it) and extra again for putting rim tape on (seriously... you'd build a wheel but charge extra for tape?) He might be a good mechanic, maybe even excellent, but honestly that's no way to win business. So my $ go elsewhere. *** Response to Hersch Polonsky *** Hi Hersch. Not sure why you think it's OK to attack someone, call them a penny pincher and put down their equipment because you don't share their view/experience? You'll notice that I didn't attack Andy personally; in fact I acknowledged that many people (including yourself it seems) consider him a brilliant mechanic. My review was measured and fair, and does not warrant your vitriole. This was an opportunity for Andy to demonstrate the attention to detail and quality you speak of, and it was an opportunity lost. Though "only" an $80 job on the day... it has cost him thousands in future sales/servicing. Andy thought he was talking to an idiot (charging for removing a cassette and rim tape?!) but didn't realise I've been riding bikes for 15 years and know enough to know when someone's trying to take me for a ride. For what it's worth, K-Mart doesn't sell DT240s hubs or Sapim CX-Ray spokes. And given Andy had a crack at my choice of equipment too, I'm inclined to think he may have put you up to your response.
Andrew at Kaos is a seriously skilled mechanic. There's plenty of other bike shops and mobile mechanics near me but it's worth the drive to know my bike is going to be safe on the downhill trails.
Its been difficult to get what I need, Kaos came to the rescue, amazing knowledge and help, got a unique commuter and picked up an incredible set of hand built wheels to go with it. All done in only 4 days. I am the envy of all other bicycle commuters. Thanks heaps
I assume KCB does a great trade in high-level cycles, which would explain why they dont particularly care if they get my business or not. I went in to have my brake pads replaced. The proprietor took one look at my cheap bike and immediately tried to pressure me into spending more money. He told me that he would not replace my brake pads unless I agreed to pay for further services. The proprietor also suggested that he had a legal obligation to insist on these extra services, based on the apparent condition of my bike. For all I know, this might actually be true, but it sounded pretty scammy, so I left. All the negative reviews of KCB Ive read here ring true, especially comments about the proprietors manners. There are plenty of other good bike shops in the area, so I recommend trying them instead.
