Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to investigate the situation. I have visited with the employee at length, and we do not believe the accusation is founded. We are, and have always been, welcoming of all races, orientations, nationalities and religions. The misunderstanding of pricing was the only cause for concern here. In your discussions, you brought a beautiful, over half-a-million dollar home design, and when our team priced it as such, the communication stopped and we assumed you were no longer interested. We do not allow customers to source their own materials. Kurk Homes is a custom design & build firm and we pride ourselves on delivering a quality product. As such, we do not cut corners, source cheap material, or allow our customers to "be their own builder." For three generations and over 30 years, we have been a trusted partner with our clients in all walks of their lives, designing and developing their dream home, and it is very upsetting and disappointing to us to hear that we could not be a part of your journey.

Im really disappointed about the way we were treated. Ryan was extremely helpful and responsive at first and encouraged us to come see the show house in Huntsville. When we did, we felt very unwelcome and he was extremely unhelpful. I thought long and hard about whether to write this or not, but in interviewing home builders, this was our favorite one. We didnt understand where the added $40/sqft was coming from when we didnt even officially have a floor plan picked out yet and he didnt really act like he wanted to help us find one. It also seemed as if we had to go with pre-selected material from their show room and couldnt source our own. Whats the point of going the custom route then? We could just go with a cookie cutter builder like Perry or Dees. He acted like our budget needed to be at least $700K and quickly dismissed us. We are a mixed race family and honestly it felt like that had something to do with it. He was always extremely nice and cordial on the phone until he met us in person.

Mr. Crumpley, thank you for taking the time to review us. As a design build firm, the design process is mutually exclusive of the build process, and the design services are competitively priced at $1.50 a square foot. We do require a $2500 retainer to get started and this is credited off of the plans if we are the builder. As we mentioned in the email in October, we were and still are able to design within your budget. There are many times when an initial plan provided is modified per customer specifications and causes a design to cost more than anticipated. We offered to continue to modify the plans to suit your budget; however, since October, we had not heard anything from you. When you hired us to design the plans that is what you hired us for, we still have to earn that business on the construction in order to credit the $2500. I apologize that you feel you wasted that money since you didn't complete the plans. We have decided to donate $1,000 to Camp Hope/PTSD Foundation of America, per your suggestion of donating to a good charity. We wish you the best of luck in your future, and are sorry that we weren't able to earn your business for the construction of your home.

Completely unrealistic on pricing that they tell you about during the pre-sale, you only learn about the true price after you give them the $2,500. Once they come back with the price that is $40 per square foot more than the original quote, for a house with no special features, they then tell you that the $2,500 has all been used up by the "designer's" time, despite it being a few simple drawings with no real detail, and it would not have taken many alterations had they actually listened to what we wanted. Save yourself the aggravation and just flush 25 hundred dollar bills down the toilet. Better yet, give that money to a good charity, at least you will have something to show for it. UPDATE: Thank you for responding Mr. McGinley. The donation to Camp Hope is appreciated and much needed, but this doesn't change the fact that your salesman told us one thing when we originally went through a long list of questions, and many of these things turned out to be quite misleading. Had we known this, we would never have put down the $2,500. No one should expect your company to do work for free, but claiming that there was $2,500 of design work done is just downright dishonest. I didn't contact you again after October because it was clear that you had no intention of working with us to make it right.
