The institute provides a long list of courses for seniors. Tuition is very low and the instructors volunteer their time and knowledge. It's a great way for seniors to remain active and continue to learn.
Taking a class is the perfect incentive to stay on track with things I enjoy, as well as to learn something new! I have only taken two classes so far, but I'll definitely be taking more this year! It's affordable and fun!
I took the course "Why Studebaker Failed" taught be Leighton Schmitt. We met at Howard Park in one of their new rooms. I loved every single minute of this class. Mr. Schmitt was well prepared for each class. He certainly knows the history of Studebaker well. I had an interest in this class because I was born in South Bend, and my father and grandfather worked for Studebaker. When Studebaker closed in 1963, that was very hard on my 50 year old father. The class was absolutely excellent !! I am a retired high school teacher - so I will give it an A+. Nancy Smith
This school for Seniors is a treasure. Some of the volunteer teachers are retired professors from local colleges and are willing to share what they love with those who really want to learn. Sometimes they teach what they did as educators, sometimes they share what they love to do on their free time. Some volunteer teachers are just people who have knowledge and a passion for their chosen class to teach. We are lucky to have this in South Bend.
