Please feel free to return the t-shirt you requested. We are not a club or a spa. We are an environmental education and stewardship organization. Our programs are free. We have boats located next to the Newtown Creek because it's a federally designated Superfund site requiring community attention and advocacy. We also provide programs throughout the city and the Neversink Reservoir, often in areas less challenged. That is clear from our brochure, which you posted. We don't know what is gained by attacking our work as if we were a luxury hotel that failed to meet your expectations.

That is a misunderstanding. HarborLAB and our founder have a demonstrated history of warm and welcoming inclusion. Muslims have always been a vital part of our volunteer and student base and of the communities we serve. Muslims paddled with us on the very day you canceled. You have never met any of us and never attempted direct communication to build bridges or seek clarification. We hope you come out to enjoy our free programs. We're sorry for any wording that made you fear you'd face Islamophobia and our track record demonstrates that you certainly would not. There was no information on the ILC-NY website about your board, phone number, multifaith/interfaith relations, LGBTQ+ inclusion, etc. so we placed a query. Again, we wish communications had been better and apologize for any stumbles in our outreach. To avoid such situations going forward all partnering groups must agree to HarborLAB's DEI statement: "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Statement Regardless of ability, ethnicity, spirituality or secular philosophy, immigration status or national origin, sex or gender identity, sexual orientation, race or socioeconomic background everyone should have equal access to the benefits of our waterways and nature as a whole. The volunteers and students of HarborLAB know that peoples access to New York Citys estuary and watershed has historically not been equitable and that inequities persist. So embracing, celebrating, and uplifting diversity and inclusion is fundamental to our organization. Our environmental education and stewardship programs are for everyone, and all should feel warmly welcomed. That is why we foster belonging in the outdoors, recognize the importance of historically significant places, and empower leaders from all communities through partnerships and advancement within our ranks. Everyone has a stake in the protection of our public waterways and keeping the water we love and need healthy for the next generation."

Our Sunday school class (all Muslims) were planning to have a field trip here. One week before we were going Erik Baard (founder of HarborLab) emailed us asking for our view on our Israeli-Palestine conflict which was completely unrelated and inappropriate. Because of Mr. Baards unjust judgement on our Muslim group, we cancelled our visit.

The founder sent an Islamophobic email to our Muslim non-profit after we planned a trip for many months. I understand that this organization does good work for the community, but this discriminatory email was very hurtful to us and we had to book with another organization.
