Our visit to AKIRA was marred by a number staff faults. Given the Japanese pride themselves on exceptional service in the native country, this is not what we experienced during our afternoon tea. First of all, there was no one at the front-of-house to greet new guests so we waited a bit as we saw people milling about. When we were seated, we quickly placed our orders - a hot beverage with the savoury and sweet wagashi. About 15-20 minutes later, another duo sat on the adjacent table who were also having the afternoon tea. To our surprise, they promptly received the platter while we were still waiting. My partner noticed the chef motioning to the waiter they had mixed it up. In fairness, the waitress apologised profusely for the error and we were given the set too. Nonetheless another issue followed - we had not gotten our drinks which we had to follow up. Well, as for the wagashi itself. I think the savouries were quite underwhelming. The sushi is only a shadow of what they serve on their main menu (based on what I've observed) and the croquette was hardly memorable. I did enjoy the mochi, kasutera and dorayaki though. Their sweets are much more delicious. I went in expecting a traditional tea ceremony but came out with the impression AKIRA is trying to be something it isn't.
Wonderful food and service. We had the five course taster menu. It's brilliant, well prepared and also balanced in terms of being adventurous without being too testing.
We came to try the Bentos during its 50% off promotion. While it was great to experience and the presentation was very beautiful, the food was quite disappointing. If only does it taste as good as it looks
