While HIPAA prohibits a doctor from directly discussing any patient encounter in a public forum, we are proud of our customer service and are happy to share how we would handle a situation like this one. Every new patient to our practice receives a welcome email detailing what to expect at their appointment. There is a paragraph in this email that specifically addresses out of pocket charges that insurances dont cover, and it directly references retinal imaging. This information is provided prior to every new appointment. There are also many misconceptions about glasses prescriptions. The main one from this review is that the doctor gives or chooses the prescription for the patient, and this couldnt be farther from the truth. During a refraction, the doctor systematically changes lenses in front of the patients eyes to narrow down what the patient says is clearest. The final prescription is the one that the patient says is best, and that the doctor confirms gives the patient their best vision possible. Many patients dont know that eyes dont follow a calendar. Although an eye exam is recommended annually, our prescription can change at any time. Just as our weight can fluctuate up and down, so can a glasses prescription. The reasons for changes are numerous, but a few examples are blood sugar changes, hormones, and the natural aging process of the eyes. In the rare event that a glasses prescription needs to be rechecked, we are happy to do it at no charge for patients who have purchased their eyewear through our office. We have to charge for this service when glasses we did not make are involved because it takes our staff significantly more time to research what another lab has done. When they are our glasses, we already have this information on file. This often means that, unfortunately, when a patient chooses to purchase eyewear elsewhere, it limits our ability to help them when problems arise.

I visited Dr. Sanders. They would not tell you this when making an appointment, but they charge you extra $39 for what they call mandatory retinal imaging. I will be happy to pay extra if I get a better service. I got the prescription from Dr. Sanders in January, 2022 with which I immediately ordered my sunglasses. However, I had difficulty adjusting to them even after wearing them for several weeks. So I called them and they had to check my glasses if they are correct as prescribed. They were correct and they would charge additional for the reexamination. I had to make another appointment for the reexam. Guess what? After a more careful examination, she gave me a correct prescription this time. But she never admits she gave me a wrong prescription in the first place. She has basically said, it was my eye that went wrong. Later the manger called "to address" the issue, but she is even worse. She has been depending Dr. Sanders whole time and never listen to what I have to say. She said "computers don't lie." So it is my eye lying then? I complained why Dr Sanders did not examine my eyes more carefully in the first place. The GM said the Dr followed "a standard procedure." By the way, they are very fast. The standard procedure took less than 10 minutes to get all the exam, a brief time with the Dr. and the prescription. But be aware of the quality of their standard procedure. The GM also blamed my decision for not getting my glasses fixed with them, by saying if I did glasses with them, they could replace my glasses. I feel so bad that I have chosen this place in the first place.

We are genuinely surprised by this review, as most of our patients rave about how seamless our online patient portal makes their registration and insurance verification process. Yes, insurance companies do require us to collect a significant amount of personal data in order to file a claim for a patient, but we can always skip most of the paperwork if the patient wants to pay out of pocket instead. The health history portion of our new patient paperwork, however, is critical for a comprehensive eye health exam. Since our doctors dont do refreshes on glasses prescriptions, a full medical history is necessary for us in evaluating the overall health of the eye as well as any vision concerns. And because of the COVID pandemic, we do use OptoMap retinal images instead of a traditional dilation whenever possible because this keeps both the patient and our doctors at a safer social distance during the exam. Last, all of this information is disclosed to the patient verbally at the time the initial appointment is made, and we follow up with an emailed summary prior to the appointment as well. We dont like for patients to be surprised at check in or check out at our office, so we communicate exactly what to expect prior to each patients visit. Our team spends a lot of time preparing for each patients appointment with us. We believe when everyone is on the same page, the patient will have a much better experience.

Extensive paperwork to get an appointment. When I arrived all I needed was a refresh on my glasses prescription. The office tried to require the eye scan in lieu of dilation. I am very healthy and didn't not want any of these services. I promptly left and will never visit this office again. Wento lone star family vision and took care of everything for our $25 copay. I don't know how ya'll are in business!

Sadly, insurance gets in the way of taking care of our patients many times. While we do our best by pre-verifying coverage for every patient, we can only send to insurance what they cover.
