The State of California and the County of Marin have both established ambitious goals of reaching "zero waste" by diverting as much material as possible from our landfills. The latest target in this effort is food waste, which can be put into the green compost can. By bundling trash, recycling and compost services all into one bill, there is no incentive available to reduce your bill by NOT participating in recycling or composting. Yes, this forces the costs of making these services available on you even when you don't think you want to use them, but the idea is to encourage their use to help achieve the goal of zero waste. Keep in mind that studies show food waste comprises about 23% of the waste stream, so if food composting catches on over time the way recycling has, it may be possible for you to reduce the size of your trash can, which DOES provide a way to keep your costs down.

Reviews aren't going to matter much as they operate in a monopoly as there is no other choice in Mill Valley (other than heading to the dump each week myself). The three stars should be 5 for reliability. They come. They pick it up consistently. It's not 5 because they raise their rates based on their inability to control their own labor costs and they force costs on you that you may not choose (green pale - I don't need one yet I'm forced to pay for it). We need a competitor.
So disappointed for repeated failure to complete a service we pay quite a bit extra for. After many phone calls over several occasions and promises of getting it right the next time, not any better. Folks with bad backs could use a reliable service that removes and returns garbage a recycling up a driveway, but it's not worth the tremendous aggravation and I have to bring the can up the driveway myself AND pay for it. Not worth one star.
I read some complaints...which I am sure have substance but my experience, 30 years worth in Tiburon, has been very good...not an easy job and I want to commend the guys on job well done...keep it up and thank you
The rules about recycling have changed, and everyone is going to have to learn all over again exactly what is and isn't truly recyclable. The recycling marketplace as we had known it collapsed when China stopped buying most of what America was sending them due to high levels of contamination and unrecyclable material mixed in with good material. Our new system is a direct response to this collapse. We sent instructional newsletters about the new system (also available on our website), and our drivers can no longer pick up recycle carts that are not properly sorted according to the new system.

I echo the previous reviewers negative comments. Very Poor service! Mill Valley Refuse Service refusal to pick up our recycle after rolling out an ill conceived and fatally flawed, program. Alternate weeks, one plastic, one paper...really.. You expect that to work long term. Our plastic recycle was rejected for the second week in a row because of two envelopes in in the plastic bin. Give me a break. We need to look for am alternate / competitive provider through city hall.
