Hate to do this for an establishment going through a lot during the pandemic. I have been here many times whether its Groove or previous establishments. Date- April 13th Wed. Good - Bouncer at the front 5 stars. Host - Black male, 5 stars. Waiter - 4 Stars $$ - reasonable. NO COVER charge. Band - Base, Lead guitar, drums and Black female singer ( How will I know- Whitney) are 5 stars. Big up to the band who did a 90 minute set with out a break. Bad - Horrible sound system. Distortion all night. Sound engineering - No stars. Asian looking female singer may be 3 stars. Her mic wasn't working or she is just not good. Worst - Black male singer. Who was trying to do it too much and pitchy all night. We had videos of the band. I watched it again. Its horrible. I am not trying to be Simon Cowell here. I love good sound. I have a better sound system at home. I go to many places where they have local bands. Just walk down the block to Cafe Wha to listen their sound balance. These are easy fix. I will be back. Hopefully better next time.
A bit of a mixture of a dining and party place. This doesn't really work out for me. Staff is very fussy about where you position yourself in the place and keeps on telling you not to sit here and not to stand there. All in all it has more an atmosphere of a beer garden than of a soffisticated soul club. The band consists of very proficient singers and musician but lacks keyboards and horns, to really get the motown sound. It also plays too comercial songs, which seem to satisfy the rather drunk audience but turned me off more than anything else. After two sets I had enough and left, feeling rather dissatisfied. The place doesn't live up to the high NY-music-club-standards. There are definately much better places!
