I really want to like this organization but i honestly wish i signed up for a language course elsewhere. This is definitely not where you should sign up if you are looking to learn in a serious, structured environment on a timeline. The organization is so incredibly disorganized, it seems everything is a suggestion. To start with, the course i enrolled for was postponed for a week, just one day before the class was supposed to start. After just one class, we have been informed by the instructor that she will be away for 2 weeks and GLN has to either find substitutes or cancel the classes. While i understand that instructors are volunteers and do not blame the instructor, i'm failing to understand how GLN was not aware and prepared for this. GLN doesn't think to communicate this with students, it was the instructor who informed us. GLN also doesn't think to communicate that they are unable to find a substitute even up until the day before class is supposed to hold. If i hadn't called to find out what the deal is, i would still have planned my Thursday as if the class would hold. This is not okay. I encourage GLN to straighten out its processes. While it is understood that the organization is reliant on volunteers, GLN can be a lot more organized. Again if you are pursuing learning a language seriously, i wouldn't recommend that you take it with GLN as it operates right now.

Hi Daniel, I am so sorry to hear about your negative experience with GLN. For a little context, we had enough people to start your class when you were sent the welcome email. However, we had several students transfer out or drop the class over the weekend, and after speaking with the teacher, we decided to cancel the class. We really hope to offer the class in the spring. In regards to your comment about refunds, we do process all refunds manually and there are over 700 students we are working with this fall, so we simply request your patience as our small staff and team of volunteers get to your refund. If there is anything else that you would like to share with us, we are open to your comments and suggestions. Thanks for your understanding and again, we are sorry your experience was not the best. If we can be of any further assistance, please call us at 202-684-6627. The Global Language Network

Edit 9/15: After I posted my initial review below, a representative from GLN reached out to me and clarified that there had initially been three students registered for the course and two had transferred or dropped prior at the last minute, which explains the initial welcome e-mail implying that the class was happening, and then subsequent cancellation. This is in contrast to what I was told when I initially called GLN and was told that I was the only student who had signed up. I guess the lady who answered the phone was ill-informed. GLN was very apologetic when we talked after I posted the review, and helpful in trying to work out a solution that would satisfy me. I'm going to give GLN a second chance and try a different class this semester. I'll update this review further once I've done that. Original review: I registered and paid and was extremely excited to take my class. Once I got my official welcome e-mail a week beforehand, I was even more excited. Then, the day before class was scheduled to begin, they canceled it. Apparently not enough people signed up. If they would have warned me, I could have tried to get my friends to sign up to make it happen, but instead they chose to lie to me with a welcome e-mail for a nonexistent class. And now I have to wait three more weeks to get back the money I paid a month ago when I signed up. So I guess if you want to give out interest free loans for two months and get nothing in return, GLN is the perfect organization for you.

I took Russian online and had a fantastic experience. What a great organization! My instructor, Max, was professional and creative in his lessons. Would (and have) recommend!

Ironically, when I lived in DC I never had time to take a GLN class, but since they begun offering virtual classes due to the pandemic, I've taken two, and they've both been great! I loved getting the chance to keep up my language skills, and especially during the strange COVID year, it was great to get to connect with the teachers and other students!

I took a French class with GLN during the Spring of 2021. It was completely online and remote - which I had no issue with since I had spent all of Summer and Fall 2020 in a remote, intensive French course. I have been taking French for about 3 years and wanted to keep up on my language skills. I enrolled in my course and at first had an okay experience. My class was two hours long and met once a week. However, even with such a long class and only 6 students in the course, I often only spoke once or twice a class. The content was not very engaging and I was not getting my money's worth out of this course. After giving it a shot and staying in the course for about 6 or 7 weeks, I decided to leave the course and ask for a refund as it is not a small price to pay. At this point in time, I would probably give GLN a 3 star review. My reason for the 1 star review is the response I received from staff at GLN. After initially reaching out with my concerns and my request for even a partial refund (I had taken half the class, so I could understand that logic), I barely received a response. At first my complaints were passed onto a higher-up and then responded to by someone else. They denied my request and had said I spent too much time in the course to get a refund - even though they understood my frustrations. They continued to pass me on to different individuals who never gave a clear answer on why I couldn't receive a refund or any sort of compensation. The cherry on top was when the Founder - Andrew Brown - sent me an automated message to tell me I had not earned my stipend, but that they were offering my next level at GLN this summer. I responded to this email again with my complaints and asked for any explanation to which he continued to avoid and I have still heard nothing back. I am sure there are some great classes here, but there are definitely cheaper options that will actually do wonders to improve all aspects of your language acquisition and won't take your money without any consideration for low quality courses.
