This is a bare-bones municipal theater that is functional, but obviously done on a tight budget befitting a small NC mountain town. That said, I've been to several excellent events here, so the negative aspects of this review review are meant to encourage the town to improve the concept to 5 stars. First, it suffers the troubles of all municipal multi-purpose event rooms: the floors are flat to accommodate conferences and banquets. Luckily the stage is high enough so that sight lines aren't terrible, but unsurprisingly mediocre. Though large and boomy, the acoustics are OK. The sound system is very basic stereo with two hanging box speakers, so the sound can be very uneven, depending on your seat. The sound board looks state-of-the-art, and the operator adequate if not a perfectionist about mic placement. There were too few mics, and not much attention paid to careful placement-- which was a drawback to the excellent musicians. I've been there several times, and sound is always the weak point-- but ain't that always the case. Theatrical lighting is limited to a single pipe about 1/3 back, and there were unnecessary dark spots, the overall level pretty dim, and no color range. They really need some modern LEDs and more places to hang them. Looked like a marginal budget situation. The chairs are hard folding metal ones with a pancake thin cushion on each. After about an hour, you're ready to go home. Temp control was fine, and there were no windows, so lighting could be more detailed-- maybe more in the future. It is a pretty room with timber framed ceiling and simple painted walls. A bar with its own brewery is attached, and a food truck with decent grub sits in the parking lot. I think you can bring food and drink into the venue, which is a good positive. All in all, it's way better than the average elementary school gym for concerts, etc. It's just sad that towns can't manage a real theater anymore plus a good meeting/banquet room. All about money. Maybe they'll be able to add a 200 seat theater with raked seating in the future. The town has a c. 1940 movie theate. Maybe an entrepreneur will surface to make it go! In the meantime, it's an acceptable situation that could be easily better with a few tweaks. Happy it's there.
