Hi Jared. Im sorry you felt like you had a bad experience. We make it a priority for our Front Desk staff to get here before we open every day to pick up messages and return calls. Im not sure why we wouldnt have gotten back to you. We are very busy this time of year. Greenwood is open from 9 am 4 pm every day, so its important that the public know they can always call us during those hours if they feel like they are not getting the help that they need. We also have a very detailed recording for when our phones are busy, or we are closed, telling people what to do until we are able to advise them directly. We always refer rabbits to Colorado Wild Rabbit Foundation or the rehabilitator in Larkspur. I know from answering the phones and dealing with rescues that finding a wild animal in need of help can be very traumatic. I appreciate you guys wanting to help. We care a lot about rabbits and we do anything in our power to help them. We always advise not to feed orphaned wildlife, because this can lead to their death. Our staff and volunteers go through hours of training to understand how to properly handle and feed baby wild animals. Weve heard of and seen many suffering young animals who die because they were fed by unknowing members of the public. Rabbits need a very sterile environment and are easily stressed by the presence of humans. They are only fed twice a day, so they are extremely full when mom gets done with them. This means they can go up to two days without being fed. Im glad you felt like you got the help you needed in the end.

They failed to return our call. We called Greenwood Wildlife moments after accidentally disrupting a baby rabbit nest. No after hours contact or callback. We felt pretty hopeless. The Rehabilitation sites state NOT give them food or water. And do NOT handle. I understand this for some situation but not when it comes to baby bunnies. We resorted to loosely piecing together advice over the internet. Wouldve been nice to have local support to guide us through a really stressful time in trying to save a litter of bunnies. Several days later we stumbled onto Colorado House of Rabbits website. They have two ~2 licensed wildlife rehabilitators for infant rabbits. The rehabilitor in Larkspur is highly regarded. These experts should be at the very top of google search for Rabbit rehabilitation instead of Greenwood Wildlife. Hindsight, we shouldve just watched YouTube videos on how to feed baby bunnies while waiting for the right rehabilitator to take them in. Time is of the essence as infants cant survive long without milk. We should have checked their bellies in the morning for plumpness, that would have told us if mom had returned. We call wildlife experts for guidance & help. It wasnt until we spoke to the rehabilitor in Larkspur that we got that. It couldve been a simple rescue with a $6 can of KMR and an eye dropper. Rabbits are not rodents, they bring joy to a lot of children & adults. Theyre native to this area, and deserve the same level of compassion as any other infant wildlife in distress. The M.O. should be to help rescue these babies ASAP, not nonchalantly assume mom will return while they slowly starve.
Hi Tara. I just spoke to our Front Desk staff, who took the calls about the pelican today. I was told we referred you to the appropriate rehab facility (Birds of Prey) that was closer, and thus it would be easier for them to help address the problem. If Birds of Prey is unable to help you, then you should call us again and we can offer additional support. We are a resource for all wildlife in Colorado. Even if the animals best option does not involve coming to Greenwood, we are still here to help. Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any additional questions about the advice you were given. Thanks for caring about our local wildlife!

Refused to help with an injured Pelican at Crown Hill Park. Very disappointing. When I called Chelsea per her suggestion below, her support was to try to talk me through how to catch the pelican myself.
Hi Darren, We are legally required to report all potential human contact with animals classified as Rabies Vector Species (like raccoons) to the health department of the corresponding county. We do not call animal control. Once we have reported it to the health department, they take the case over, and we no longer have anything to do with it. They make the decisions that they feel are appropriate in order to protect the health and safety of all of those involved. Unfortunately, this sometimes means they may have to test for rabies if they are worried about contact between the animal and humans or pets. The only conclusive test for rabies require a brain tissue sample, which cannot be taken from a live animal. If we did not report these cases to the health department, then we would lose our license and the 40 80 raccoons along with the thousands of other birds and mammals that we care for each year would have nowhere to go. Many of them would end up suffering and dying. Our staff and volunteers are extremely compassionate about animals. Every time we become involved with a difficult situation like a Rabies Vector Species that was potentially handled by humans, it takes a toll on all of us. As Im sure you understand, wildlife rehabilitation can be very hard and emotionally draining. We are very saddened by this raccoon's outcome and the distress it must have caused you as the rescuer looking out for its well-being.

If you are trying to help a wild animal, do not contact this place. They are not interested in the wellbeing of innocent animals. They will tell you that their "expert" is on another call in order to get your contact info. Then they give your info to the department of health. I learned a hard lesson by trying to help a poor little orphaned raccoon find a home to help him until he was able to go back into the wild. I ended up having to turn him over to animal control so he could be euthanized and tested for rabies. He tested negative. Greenwood cost this poor little animal his life. I also learned that this is what they do through experiences that others shared with me in dealing with these cruel, heartless individuals who work at this place. Shame on you shady people!!
