My husband and I went there to adopt a dog. They gave us the directions to go look at that was all. They never talked to us about any of them. They were more worried about getting them outside to go to bathroom and putting them back in their jail, so they could go home! They kept yelling 23 minutes!! I left crying!! I wish I could adopt all of them. I seen one worker just yank the poor dogs neck to get him to listen.
We are not city folk. We have acreage and farm animals. Two of our pets have recently been euthanized by our vet due to old age and poor quality of life. One had tumors and was becoming crippled. The other had diabetes and organs were shutting down. We'd had them for 12-13 years. We also recently had two dogs dumped near our home. I made appointments for both with our vet and we planned to keep them. However, one was not chicken-friendly and began killing, so we re-homed her. We will keep the other. We have one elderly Labrador Retreiver, who I've not kept current on vaccinations because he's crippled and so heavy that transport to the vet is traumatic for him. He is very happy and pain-free if left at home. All of this info came to light in my application to adopt from the humane society. Somehow, with the recent euthanizing of two family pets, the fostering of two strays and the need to re-home one of them, I guess it appeared that we have a very high turnover of animals which is not the case at all. This humane society frowned upon learning that we sometimes keep dogs outside, as if we are cruel, irresponsible pet owners. Nevermind that we have a farm and thousands of dollars invested in plush dog houses with heat in them, heated waterers, etc... My application was denied. In a matter of minutes, a lady there turned my bubbly, overjoyed 10-yr-old son into a teary-eyed, confused little boy. We were told that we would never, ever be allowed to adopt in the future. Never in my life have I been spoken to like that. I can't figure it out. My wife feels that it was judgment based upon my appearance. I was in dirty work clothes and had no teeth, due to recent cancer treatments. If I looked like a meth head or crack dealer, it's because I've been on chemotherapy and radiation all year. I'm typically 70 pounds heavier and in a shirt and tie. We are rural Christian folks and it's not every week or every year that our pets are at the end of their lives. I didn't even let my son ride the bus home from school on that day because it's an hour-long ride, which may have interferred with him getting his puppy. I arranged to pick him up at school and immediately go adopt a puppy for him. Perhaps there's a special place in Hades for obtuse people who treat others the way we've been treated. Nonetheless, I have no desire to ever again donate or conduct business with the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri.
Blonde lady at Intake said "We cant help you, take your dog somewhere else".. Gladly, would rather release him in the wild than leave him with you no doubt.
