First Ill start with the good. The staff/owners are very nice and helpful, good people I can tell. They greet you and say bye on your way out. Also, they sell decent tru spec stuff and some civilian boots and apparel that seem decent enough and normally priced. However the store itself is very disappointing. For a surplus store they have very little surplus, and on top of that they charge 2-4 times the amount you would expect to pay at any decent surplus store or online. They sell some used ACUs and BDUs that are pretty faded and in bad condition, for $25. $50 for a whole set. Thats a good price brand new, but their selection was not brand new. A used UCP rain jacket for like $80 or $70 I think? Crazy. I get that they are a business but if those prices are necessary then they probably just shouldnt even be stocking those items. Again a big problem is the lack of surplus stuff. They have like no modern pouches and the one they do have (flashbang/multi purpose) was like $20, its worth $10 at most. Also the staff/owners, although helpful, really dont know much about military gear. They dont know about army regulation for example, for another example they had a hot weather tag inside a clearly Gore-Tex boot. I mean if you know what you are looking for you might find something.
I don't really check reviews too often. It's 2019 and I am just seeing this one. I guess I should check these more. As for Union War being 10x better. Yes. I managed that store for almost 20 years. They opened in 1946 and stayed open for 63 years. Everyone was sad to see it go. It was a landmark. When it closed, as a lot surplus stores around the country are closing, I wanted to try to keep the surplus type store alive. There is too much Amazon, Costco and big box stores killing small unique businesses. So I scrapped up my savings and with the help of vendors that I knew for years, I opened this 1800 sq ft. store and tried to fill it the best I could with the $ available. Military surplus is getting harder and harder to find. Back in the day you could buy pallets of stuff very cheap. Those days are long gone. I do carry military surplus field jackets, used camouflage pants, bags, pouches and other unique items. I also carry major brands like- Dickies, Ben Davis, Wolverine boots, USA made Thorogood boots, Benchmade knifes to name a few. I have one of the largest pin displays in So Cal. I also carry patches, flags, hats, tactical gear, and a lot of unique items. If someone is looking for something that I don't have, I usually know where to get it. Yes Union War Surplus was an awesome store. My goal is to someday expand using that as my model. I have come a long way in the 9 years I have been open. Hopefully the growth will continue. Thanks for stopping by. Jeff
