I had a negative experience volunteering for SFCASA. After going through a very onerous training program and application process, I found it objectionable that they prevented me from advocating for my youth according to my judgment. After donating over one hundred hours to the organization, I didn't feel that I could continue. I was disappointed.
After a career in corporate consulting, I signed up for the CASA training and have now been a CASA for almost 3 1/2 years. I had expectations of what it'd be like working with a foster youth, but never did I expect this experience to be challenging, educational and also so incredibly rewarding. I am constantly learning in this role--every youth is different and every situation calls for tailored solutions. Luckily, I have had super supportive SFCASA supervisors and staff who are impressive professionals that have guided me each step of the way. It takes a village, especially when it comes to our foster youth. <3
I am just starting out as a CASA volunteer, but I love it so much. The organization is full of genuine, kind-hearted people with a great mission. I am lucky to be starting around the holidays, so I get to participate in the SFCASA gift drive delivering Christmas presents to the youth I work with. This organization provides a really special service to foster youth and I feel so fortunate to be a volunteer.
I've had the honor of being a CASA for more than 12 years. The team of individuals that work for SFCASA have been professional and supportive every time I've needed assistance with my case. I depend on their experience to guide me through any challenges I may have advocating for a youth. The staff reminds me (in the most gentle way!) it's not about me and my "better judgement" but about boundaries, expectations, and most importantly, the long term needs of the youth. People say these kids are lucky to have a CASA. I disagree. I'm fortunate to be a CASA for kids who never should need one.
