This review is specifically for Dr Beverly Smith every other person Ive dealt with at Metro has been wonderful. I was assigned Dr Smith for a checkup bc my regular doctor was on leave. Ive never been treated so poorly in my life. She didnt bother to look at patient notes from my previous visits and then questioned every diagnoses that my doctor had made long ago all the while belittling and disrespecting me. And then she decided to no longer prescribe a medication Id been prescribed for 10+ years bc she didnt like my attitude. Ive filed a formal complaint but wanted to get the word out to others. Not only will I never see her again, Im leaving the entire practice behind. If you have a chance to be seen by Dr Beverly Smith, dont take it.
Pandemic review update: I have a new PCP after Dr Seltman retired- Rebecca Altman. She's a dream and a great practitioner. I am updating this review because of Metro's billing practices. Metro participates in Medicare- meaning they accept the contracted rates as they do with Medicaid. They billed things wrong for me once in the past and sent me a balance of $25. Not only do I have multiple forms of coverage, I am also eligible for their financial aid. Trying to fix it was impossible and they sent it TO COLLECTIONS. A federally qualified health center that exists in part to help poor people sent a $25 incorrect bill to collections. Despite poverty, I have actually been lucky enough to avoid collections for medical bills. Even UPMC is kinder than this. I finally got it resolved by discussing it with my doctor who found it disturbing. Well, now, during a global pandemic when everyone is struggling most, they are billing me incorrectly again, attempting to get the extra $25 that they are not allowed to bill me. My first contact was to the disconnected number on the bill. The next contact was through email to both the billing dept and my PCP where I was told multiple times by billing that someone would look into things. I continued to receive the bills with no responses. I finally get them on the phone and they claim medicaid didn't pay one thing and I had to contact them, basically claiming it was not Metro's problem. I said that I needed them to guarantee it would not be sent to collections. The person I spoke to said she would send it to her supervisor who would contact me with any issues. We'll see. I then contacted my medicaid plan whose great customer service rep called them and explained that everything was paid and they are not allowed to be billing me for extra after what was paid. I am not very confident they will actually fix it this time though. And I had to spend all of this time fixing something even I knew wasn't supposed to happen in the first place. Overall, I find it pretty offensive that any medical system- especially a federally qualified health center that exists to help poor people among others- is being terrible over a $25 bill during a global health crisis. It's so disappointing because the things they do well, they do great. But, this billing thing is neglectful at best and predatory at worst. Original review: I have been going to Metro since it was in Wilkinsburg. I was frustrated with them moving to Edgewood Towne Center because I can no longer get there without taking an uber/lyft or 3 buses. That said, it is worth the trek. I have been seeing Dr Seltman there for years now. He is kind, caring, educated, validating, and has diverse approaches to medicine. The nurses and other staff at Metro are absolutely wonderful and kind. I am a queer trans person and I feel safe at this office. I also do not have to spend my entire appointment educating my doctor. I know other folks who see other doctors there who enjoy them as well. They used to have financial aid before Obamacare. I started there when I had no insurance. I assume they have something similar in place for people with variable income situations. Like I said, the only downfall of Metro is the location. It's a wonderful clinic with wonderful humans working there. Edited to add: I have since met other queer and trans people with different doctors than me who did not have as favorable experiences. So, I don't want anyone to go in expecting perfection because of my review. Hopefully things will always continue to improve. Edit 2: Dr Seltman has retired and I now see Rebecca Altman NP. She is excellent.
I really wanted to like this clinic. They have done some good things for me--finally believed me about my diagnosis and paid for some of the cost of my expensive prescription so I could afford it. Unfortunately, the pros do not outweigh the cons. I see physicians here for both medical and psychiatric issues, and heaven forbid I ever have an urgent medical issue, because these people do NOT follow back up with you. To get a single issue resolved, I need to call regularly 8 times because nobody ever gets back to me. This has happened for both physical and mental health needs. My old psychiatrist who worked there also did not monitor my medications properly. If you want a responsive and responsible clinical team, don't go to Metro. You will not get it. I'll be transferring my information to another doctor's office as soon as I am able.
