The noise issue here between upstairs and downstairs units is utterly terrible and will absolutely decrease your quality of life. I've been a tenant here for 15 months and it is clear that the walls connecting upstairs and downstairs units are absurdly thin and hollow. In the past few weeks, a new upstairs neighbor has moved in and I can hear every single footstep crystal clear. The footsteps create a low-frequency, shaking thud that is impossible to ignore or drown out even with earplugs and a fan - you can FEEL the footsteps from the upstairs tenant vibrate your entire unit. On top of having this new issue with the upstairs tenant, when I first moved in the tenant directly below me would constantly make noise complaints against me even though I was just walking, and would actually smack the broom against their ceiling to let me know that I'm "walking too loud", and a newer downstairs tenant recently had to knock on my door and talk to me personally about the noise issue. I've learned to tip-toe like a mouse around my own unit so as to not disturb the downstairs tenants. This review is not rage-filled and is as objective as possible. The staff here are nice. The amenities are nice. The location is nice. Absolutely none of this matters due to the atrocious floor design and sound travel here. With extreme confidence I cannot recommend that anybody sign a lease here since you will almost certainly either deal with 1) poor sleep and anxiety from constant shaking/thudding of the unit from footsteps of the upstairs tenant and/or 2) constant harassment about making too much noise when you are simply walking in your unit.

UPDATE: As you can see, The Garey asked me to contact them. I've made several attempts and none of them have been returned. Downgrading to 1 star. Giving the Garey two stars: One for being a gorgeous building. They have amazing amenities, maintained units, and are centrally located in the quiet Arts District (except on weekends when the breweries bring hundreds of people drunkenly exploring the neighborhood). Im giving an additional one to Saul who helped me move in. Hell likely be the person who will help you find your unit, complete all of the paperwork, and access your unit for the first. Saul is an amazing asset to this property. It wouldnt be the same without him. However, the rest of the team has caused nothing but nightmares for me. Lets start from the beginning: - When I viewed the apartment, I was quoted $1850 a month. Because I didnt sign the lease the day I viewed the apartment, the price somehow increased ~$300. I now pay $2500 after utilities and parking. - They said they had fire alarm issues before, but it was resolved. It goes off a couple times a month still at random hours. During quarantine, you can imagine how unsafe and annoying this is. - After a few weeks, I noticed people leave trash outside their apartments. I then started noticing the smell of pee everywhere. Of course with this, there is a bug issue throughout the building. I keep my apartment spotless, but still get flys and other bugs all of the time. I notify maintenance who say Im on the schedule to have my unit treated, but have yet to see them treat it. - The WiFi was out for weeks rendering our Amazon lockers, printer, and snack bar (since removed due to COVID) useless. - I have gotten accused of excessive noise and smoking, which has led to harassment from one neighbor, management, and security. However, the noise complaints were about a dog barking, which I dont own one. I also dont smoke. Management was unresponsive until I looped in the CEO. Management was still unable to resolve it so the executives had to get involved. They ultimately kicked out the resident below me for making false complaints and wasting resources. - Their response to COVID-19 is just like their response to everything else, useless or non-existent. They offered differed rent, but it was month-to-month only and requires insane amount of paperwork making it nearly impossible. When they shut down all of the amenities, they stopped taking care of the building. Emails were not returned, common areas were not cleaned, etc. While the Garey was being irresponsible, my old building and many friends were giving discounts on rent since they didnt have to maintain certain amenities. Additionally, those building enhance their cleaning. Later, they finally reopened amenities. Shortly after, someone tested positive. Even though the Garey has us tracking our activities in common areas, when I asked where the infected person has been, I received a response that they dont know and that I should treat the whole building as exposed. When I asked what their plan was to address this, I got no response. I at least expected a deep clean of the building and an improved cleaning schedule. This is when I learned I cant expect anything from this team. - Just last week, I was traveling and got home to a notice on my door (not via email or the 3+ apps they have us use) from 3 days before stating they would be power washing the parking garage. Well, I kept my naked-style motorcycle parked in my space. Due to the lack of communication, I didnt know I needed to make accommodations. Even if I did know, the lack of time wouldve made it difficult to do. My bike was left with water damage and covered in debris. Management has been unresponsive yet again. - When I moved in, I was told we have free printing and scanning. Today I went to print something and to my surprise, The Garey now charges for printing. No communication. DO NOT MOVE HERE. IT IS A FACADE. ITS A PRETTY BUILDING WITH TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT, SECURITY, AND NEIGHBORS.
